14 Year Old Players

Exclusive to Scottsdale Soccer Recreational Program -- 14 year olds can play Rec soccer!!!

If you are a 14 year old player and thought you were done with Rec soccer, think again! By popular demand, we are continuing with the top age group for Rec soccer including 14 year olds. We are again taking 12, 13, and 14 year olds into the oldest age group, calling it U15 (Under 15). If you are still 14 as of July 31, 2010, then you can play! Please follow the registration directions and you will be placed on a team.

Please understand that we will spread the 14 year olds evenly across all teams. No single team should have more than one more or one fewer 14 year old than any other team. If you have any questions, please send them to recsoccer@scottsdalesoccer.com

Our Recreational soccer and High School soccer
As of the writing of this web page (July, 2010), Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA, the governing body for high school sports in Arizona) prohibits players from playing both high school soccer and Club soccer such as the programs offered by Scottsdale Soccer.  From the viewpoint of Scottsdale Soccer, we have a really simple approach -- we don't care if a player plays elsewhere during the season, the player is welcome to play in any of our programs and participate in all of our activities.

It is the Arizona Interscholastic Association that cares.  AIA has put the restriction in place that a player cannot play other organized soccer at the same time the player is playing AIA soccer (high school soccer).  The schools need to be the experts on this, but there is a definite "event" in school soccer after which the player cannot play other soccer and then play school soccer again.  We believe that event is "the first school game the player participates in", so let's assume that is the case for the following example.

1.  Player attends high school tryouts and makes a school team.

2.  School team practice commences, player participates in school practice.  Player continues to participate in Scottsdale Soccer practices and games.

3.  First school game is Dec 8 and second school game is Dec 15. (These are made up dates for this example.)

4.  Player continues to practice with school team and with Scottsdale Soccer team, and plays games with Scottsdale Soccer.

5.  Player decides to not play in the school game on Dec 8 and thus has not yet created the event that says s/he is playing on the school team.

6.  Player plays in the Dec 5 Scottsdale Soccer game day and also the RecFest tournament Dec 11-13.  (Again, these are made up dates for this example but are close to our usual season schedule.)

7.  Player then plays on their school team for the Dec 15 game, thus according to AIA rules can no longer participate in Scottsdale Soccer and then play more AIA soccer.  Player cannot play in Dec 19 Scottsdale Soccer All Star game if selected (according to AIA) as this would make them ineligible for future high school soccer events.

Again, this is the way we understand it, but it is the AIA and the AIA schools that need to confirm this.  And a caution:  the schools have a vested interest in leveraging this to get your player to abandon Scottsdale Soccer and play only with the school team so please double check what you are told to make sure it makes sense to you.  Hope this helps.
